In 1920th at the junction of surgery and neurology a new specialization was born – neurosurgery. This new field offers new techniques of diagnostics and innovative treatment of diseases of the nervous system.
For almost a century, major discoveries were made in this field and new and effective methods of treatment were introduced to defeat maladies of the nervous system which were perceived as incurable in the past.
Modern neurosurgery is often referred to as an elite specialization, because it requires the highest precision and thorough knowledge.
Israeli neurosurgery at the Hadassah University Hospital: highly qualified specialists, unique methods
Significant governmental investments in the medical industry together with the rapid development of the state’s level and the desire to motivate excellence and constant improvement among physicians places Israel at the forefront of neurosurgery.
The high level of Israeli neurosurgeons is acknowledged worldwide due to some of the following reasons:
Hadassah – Department of Neurosurgery
The Department of Neurosurgery at Hadassah was established in 1941. Today, more than 900 neurosurgical procedures spanning the spectrum of subspecialties and using state-of-the-art techniques and equipment are performed annually.
The department is the only neurosurgery service in Jerusalem, and receives referrals from all over Israel and abroad for special areas of expertise. Over 700 elective and emergency operations are performed each year.
The department includes several sub-divisions:
The unit for endovascular neurosurgery at Hadassah serves as Israel’s National Stroke Center and is on the premier place in the country with the technology and capability to offer hope to the 15,000 people who suffer strokes each year.
The Hadassah Neurosurgery Department pioneered a micro-neuroanatomical laboratory at Hadassah and is renowned for leading cranial base practice in Israel in collaboration with Hadassah’s Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) and plastic surgery departments. Within its premises micro vascular neurological anatomy research and scalp-based neurosurgery in Israel were initiated; introducing navigational surgery and intraoperative Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), as well as deep-brain stimulus for Parkinson’s patients, endovascular procedures, and a mini-robot prototype.
The multidisciplinary Surgical Neurooncology service has been designated as a National Center of Excellence.
Each unit has an interdisciplinary team, that guarantees more precise diagnostics and offers the optimal method of treatment.
